Microneedling Overview

Just like laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion, microneedling is classified as a skin resurfacing technique.

Skin resurfacing treatments stimulate the body’s healing process by creating safe, controlled damage to the skin layers. As the skin heals itself, its appearance is rejuvenated, reducing the appearance of UV damage, fine wrinkles, and pigment changes.

During microneedling, a handpiece featuring several thin microneedles is placed against the skin. The microneedles create microinjuries in the skin layers, and in response, the skin tissues’ collagen and elastin protein production rate increases. This gradually and naturally revitalizes the skin.

Microneedling is a medical-grade skin treatment that can be customized based on each patient’s unique skincare needs and goals. It creates microchannels in the skin tissues, and serums can be administered to penetrate into the tissues through these microchannels, increasing these serums’ effects.

Enhance Your Results with Microneedling Plus +

Microneedling Plus + pairs the rejuvenating benefits of microneedling with the anti-aging growth factors present in PRP for naturally enhanced results.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is a substance created using the patient’s own blood. A small amount of blood is drawn and then centrifuged, resulting in PRP, a concentrated substance full of platelets and plasma. The growth factors in this substance stimulate advanced healing in the skin.

After microneedling, the PRP is applied to the surface of the patient’s skin, penetrating deep into the tissues through the microchannels. This allows it to work on a much deeper level, healing the skin from the inside out.

The Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling provides a wide variety of benefits that enhance the look and feel of a person’s skin:

-By encouraging the skin to create more collagen protein at an increased rate, this treatment tightens lax skin, in turn reducing the look of oversized pores. It also smooths away fine age lines and gives the skin a smoother texture.

-By triggering increased skin-cell turnover, microneedling reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation issues like sunspots and melasma. Increased skin-cell turnover also results in the faster natural removal of dead and damaged skin cells, creating a youthful glow and a more even complexion.

-By breaking up scar tissue, microneedling reduces the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks.

-By creating microchannels in the skin tissues, microneedling allows skincare products to penetrate past the superficial skin layer and into the deeper layers. This makes these products even more effective.

Ideal Candidates for Microneedling

People who want to achieve smoother, healthier, and more youthful-looking skin are excellent candidates for microneedling in Denver. It’s an ideal treatment option for patients looking to tighten their skin and address wrinkles without undergoing a plastic surgery procedure.

Patients who are prone to keloid scar formation should discuss this with us during their consultation. Patients who have an active skin infection, active acne, or an open wound in the area targeted for microneedling must fully treat these issues before the date of their session.

The Treatment Session

A microneedling treatment session usually takes only a half an hour. At the start of the session, Shay will administer a topical numbing cream to the targeted areas. This topical anesthetic will help prevent pain and discomfort.

Next, Shay will pass the microneedling handpiece across the skin evenly. The microneedles will safely penetrate into the tissues. This process will result in controlled microinjuries in the skin tissues.

Finally, Shay will apply skincare products, which will help calm the skin after the treatment and deeply revitalize the skin. PRP may be applied for Microneedling Plus + treatment.

The Treatment Session

Microneedling Aftercare

After a microneedling or microneedling with PRP treatment session, patients only need a day or two of downtime. Because of this, microneedling is an excellent option for people who have big events coming up soon and didn’t have the time to plan their rejuvenation in advance. Patients can safely come in for their treatment the same week as a major social event.

Since the recovery process is very short, patients can quickly get back to their daily activities. There may be a mild degree of swelling and redness in the treated regions; these will soon fade.

Patients must avoid showering for at least 72 hours after microneedling. Swimming pools, saunas, and exercising must also be avoided. Patients must not apply exfoliating products or makeup until healing is complete.

Because the skin will be more sensitive for a time, sun exposure can result in greater damage. To prevent this, patients will need to apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to the treated areas and must avoid sun exposure. They will also need to apply a recommended moisturizer.

Since microneedling triggers natural skin healing, this process does not create instant results. Collagen creation and skin-cell turnover occur gradually, and because of this, it can take a week or two to start seeing improvements in texture and tone. These results continue to improve over the following months, and in three to six months, patients experience their full results.

Denver Microneedling FAQs

Microneedling is not a painful treatment. It’s very well tolerated, and numbing cream is applied to the skin beforehand to help ensure a comfortable treatment session for patients. In some cases, patients even choose not to use the numbing cream because they don’t need it.

After microneedling, our experts may apply a soothing serum to the skin. This helps prevent pain once the effects of the numbing cream wear off. An OTC pain reliever like acetaminophen may be helpful in cases where there is post-treatment discomfort.

Physically taxing exercise sessions can exacerbate pain and discomfort after a microneedling treatment, as can extreme heat. Because of this, it’s best to avoid these immediately following your treatment.

Patients typically need a series of three microneedling sessions in order to achieve optimal results. This may vary based on factors like the type and severity of the skin issues being treated.

It’s best to wait one month between each microneedling treatment session. This allows the skin to heal while still maintaining the synergistic effect of multiple treatments.

The amount of time that microneedling’s results last will depend on a variety of factors. The patient’s age can play a role, as can their lifestyle, environment, skin type, and skin quality.

Generally, the results of microneedling will be apparent for several months to a full year after treatment. Keeping up an effective post-treatment skincare routine can extend the length of a patient’s results. This can involve applying hydrating serums to protect the skin from new damage. It can also involve applying products containing hyaluronic acid, retinol, and vitamin C.

Proper sun protection is key, since UV rays contribute to collagen breakdown. Applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen regularly is vital, as is wearing protective clothing and avoiding prolonged sun exposure. Staying hydrated and maintaining a healthy diet is also encouraged to maintain the results of microneedling.

Since smoking negatively impacts skin health and increases collagen breakdown, quitting smoking can extend the results of microneedling. Avoiding excessive alcohol consumption can also make a major difference.

Patients looking to extend the longevity of microneedling’s results can benefit from touch-up treatments two to three times a year. This is especially ideal for deeper facial wrinkles and acne scars.

Microneedling can be combined with other treatments to provide increased benefits. Along with our Microneedling Plus + option, which combines microneedling with PRP, microneedling is commonly paired with infusion of various skincare products and serums.

Microneedling is also often paired with chemical peels. The microneedling treatment is performed first, followed by application of the chosen peel to the skin. The peel solution then permeates through the skin layers, encouraging a gradual sloughing off of layers of dead and damaged skin cells. This results in increased skin rejuvenation and healthier-looking skin.

In certain cases, microneedling can be paired with laser skin resurfacing treatments. Laser skin resurfacing uses laser energy to heat the skin layers, removing dead and damaged skin. New, undamaged skin cells grow in their place, giving the skin a more youthful appearance. Using these treatments together can create excellent results.

Additionally, microneedling can be combined with red LED light therapy. After performing microneedling, red LED light therapy can be utilized, decreasing post-treatment skin inflammation and redness. This results in an even faster and more comfortable healing process after microneedling.

To find out more about skin treatments that can be safely combined with microneedling, it’s best to ask our experienced skincare experts during a consultation.
